Linda Ronstadt and James Gutierrez honored at the 2009 Hispanic Net Annual Gala Dinner. April 11, 2009

 

Linda Ronstadt and James Gutierrez were recipients of the Social Entrepreneur of the Year and Business Entrepreneur of the Year, respectively, at the 2009 Hispanic Net Annual Gala Dinner. The Event was held at the Faculty Club at Stanford University.

The well-attended event was sponsored by Fenwick & West, Solid Ground US, Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, TechBA, Union Bank of California, ABC/California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Exar, Nearsoft and Miriam Rivera. The event serves to bring members and supporters of Hispanic Net together to recap the year, share ideas and honor those who have exemplified the organizations mission.

To start, Linda Ronstadt, the highly acclaimed performer and celebrity, was recognized for her work within the Hispanic community and efforts to raise issue awareness within the mainstream society. 

She has used her influence to bring improvements in nutrition, education and economic advancement to the Hispanic community for many years. She has undertaken these efforts often without high-profile visibility. Her tireless work speaks for her commitment to the community of which she is a member and contributor.

Culturally, Ms Ronstadt has been the vanguard of mainstream artists bringing the Latino experience and culture to the mass audience. Her work is typified by such releases as Canciones de mi Padres. For more that 20 years, Ronstadt has openly and proudly identified with her Hispanic heritage.  Most recently, she was among the performer organizers of the San Jose Mariachi Festival.

Her moving acceptance speech engaged the attendees with her passionate commitment to improving the lives of the Hispanic Community. She cited the no-other-option scenario for Latinos in the US where we cannot have a majority of the population disenfranchised economically, culturally and politically.

James Gutierrez, President of Progresso Financiero, received the award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year. His company provides financial services to the underbanked and unbanked. He has targeted Hispanic population centers with a distribution network of existing retail and other commercial outlets.

Mr. Gutierrez’ speech cited the tangible improvements made in the everyday lives of hardworking people and families when they are given access to resources commonly available to mainstream society. Progresso Financiero was founded by Gutierrez and experienced substantial growth. His success has attracted additional funding and provided, to quote Mr. Gutierrez, “the personal satisfaction of giving people hope and a chance to make a better life.”

The next Hispanic Net Annual Gala Dinner is planned for April 10, 2010.
